Hunter Alpha Not Working? It Is Now MiMo-V2.5 — 5 Fixes (2026)

Most "Hunter Alpha not working" reports are one of three things: the old model ID is gone, the free tier ended, or the name changed to Xiaomi MiMo-V2.5. Here is the fix for each, plus the remaining connection and timeout cases.

Hunter Alpha Not Working? 5 Quick Fixes (2026)

🔄 Updated 2026-09-17

Hunter Alpha is now Xiaomi MiMo-V2.5, so most “not working” reports today are really one of three things: the old model ID is gone, the free tier ended, or the name changed in the picker.

  • Current ID, price and context window: MiMo-V2.5 model page.
  • The diagnostic steps below still work, but the live catalog is the source of truth — see the full model directory.
  • Asking which endpoint is free today? Union Alpha’s free window closed on 18 September 2026, when it was revealed as Unbiased Pareto and delisted — the free models page is the list that gets re-checked against the catalogue.

Quick Answer

If Hunter Alpha (Xiaomi mimo-v2) isn’t working, try these fixes:

  1. Refresh OpenRouter page or regenerate your API key
  2. Check model status at the Union Alpha tracker
  3. Reduce context size if experiencing timeouts
  4. Verify your account has active session
  5. Try alternative endpoint or wait 5-10 minutes

The model is free and occasionally experiences high load.

Issue #1: “Connection Error” or “Failed to Connect”

Symptoms

  • Error message: “Failed to connect to Hunter Alpha”
  • Page loads but chat doesn’t respond
  • Greyed-out model status

Solution

Step 1: Check if the model is online

Visit the Union Alpha tracker for live status, re-read from the catalogue.

Step 2: Refresh your session

1. Log out of OpenRouter
2. Clear browser cache (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + Delete)
3. Log back in
4. Try Hunter Alpha again

Step 3: Try incognito/private mode

This isolates browser extension interference.

Issue #2: “Request Timeout” After 30+ Seconds

Symptoms

  • Request starts but never completes
  • Spinner runs for 2+ minutes
  • Eventual “Request timed out” error

Solution

Reduce context window usage:

Hunter Alpha supports 1M tokens, but larger contexts = slower responses.

Instead of: [Paste entire 500-page document]
Try: [Paste chapters 1-5 only]

Break into smaller requests:

Request 1: "Summarize pages 1-100"
Request 2: "Summarize pages 101-200"
Request 3: "Combine and analyze both summaries"

Expected response times:

Context SizeTime to First TokenFull Response
10K tokens1-3 seconds5-15 seconds
100K tokens5-10 seconds20-40 seconds
500K+ tokens15-30 seconds1-3 minutes

If you’re waiting longer than these benchmarks, it’s likely a server issue.

Issue #3: “Rate Limit Exceeded” or “Too Many Requests”

Symptoms

  • Error: “Rate limit exceeded”
  • Error: “Too many requests, please try again later”
  • Requests fail immediately without processing

Solution

OpenRouter rate limits vary by account tier:

  • Free accounts: ~20 requests/minute, ~200 requests/hour
  • Paid accounts: Higher limits based on credit balance

Workarounds:

  1. Wait 5-10 minutes between heavy requests
  2. Use smaller context sizes to reduce processing time
  3. Upgrade OpenRouter account for higher limits
  4. Implement exponential backoff in API code:
async function callHunterAlpha(prompt, maxRetries = 3) {
  for (let i = 0; i < maxRetries; i++) {
    try {
      const response = await fetch('https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/chat/completions', {
        method: 'POST',
        headers: {
          'Authorization': 'Bearer YOUR_API_KEY',
          'Content-Type': 'application/json',
        },
        body: JSON.stringify({
          model: 'xiaomi/mimo-v2',
          messages: [{ role: 'user', content: prompt }],
        }),
      });

      if (response.status === 429) {
        const waitTime = Math.pow(2, i) * 1000; // Exponential backoff
        await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, waitTime));
        continue;
      }

      return await response.json();
    } catch (error) {
      if (i === maxRetries - 1) throw error;
    }
  }
}

Issue #4: “Model Not Found” or “404 Error”

Symptoms

  • Error: “Model not found”
  • Error: “404: The requested model does not exist”
  • Hunter Alpha disappears from search results

Solution

Step 1: Verify the model name

Hunter Alpha may also appear as:

  • xiaomi/mimo-v2 (official name)
  • Hunter Alpha (original listing)
  • mimo-v2 (short name)

Step 2: Check OpenRouter model status

OpenRouter occasionally removes models temporarily for:

  • Updates and maintenance
  • Terms of service reviews
  • Provider changes

Step 3: Check for announcements

Visit Hunter Alpha Hub for community updates on model status.

Issue #5: “Insufficient Credits” (on a Model That Used to Be Free)

Symptoms

  • Error: “Insufficient credits” or “Insufficient funds”
  • Hunter Alpha was free during the preview and is billed as MiMo-V2.5 now, so a credits error is expected

Solution

This is usually a session/cache issue:

  1. Log out and back in to OpenRouter
  2. Clear browser cache
  3. Verify model pricing shows $0.00
  4. Try a different browser or incognito mode

If problem persists:

Contact OpenRouter support at support@openrouter.ai with:

  • Your account email
  • Screenshot of the error
  • Model name you’re trying to access

When to Contact Support

Contact OpenRouter support if:

  • ✅ You’ve tried all 5 fixes above
  • ✅ Model status shows “online” but you can’t connect
  • ✅ Error persists for 24+ hours
  • ✅ You see account-specific errors
